CIfA Governance: Board of Directors

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is responsible for managing the affairs of CIfA in accordance with the Charter, by-law and regulations, with the day to day running of CIfA carried out by the staff. The Board regularly consults with the Advisory Council on policy, strategy and potentially controversial decisions.

The Board is supported by two decision making committees responsible for applications for individual accreditation or Registered Organisations status. See our committees page for more information.

The Board of Directors usually meets six times per year, and in addition Board members will be invited to attend meetings of the Advisory Council. Meeting minutes are available on the members section of the website.

Our Board of Directors can be contacted on board@archaeologists.net

Stephen Carter
Stephen Carter MCIfA
Chair

Stephen Carter BSc PhD MCIfA FSA Scot first got involved in archaeology through excavation, experiencing the excitement of working on deep waterlogged deposits in York and remarkable prehistoric sites in Orkney. In the early part of his professional career, he specialised in geoarchaeology, based on academic training in physical geography and botany followed by doctoral research in environmental archaeology. He was one of the founder directors of Headland Archaeology in 1996 and, since 2008, has continued to work as a consultant for the company. This change in role coincided with a move away from geoarchaeology and he now works on cultural heritage impact assessment, with a particular interest in setting. Outside of his employment in commercial archaeology, Stephen has a long-term interest in how the wider historic environment sector functions. This has led him to take on various voluntary positions over the past 20 years including roles in Archaeology Scotland, CBA and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland as well as committees and groups within CIfA.
