Last week, Historic England published an updated Advice Note on Minerals Extraction and Archaeology.
CIfA has been involved with negotiations over the past two years through the Minerals and Historic Environment Forum (MHEF), although the final document has been prepared by Historic England. We are pleased that Historic England, following advice from CIfA and others, took the decision not to include suggested evaluation percentages, which had been proposed by parts of the minerals sector.
We argued that there was insufficient evidence to justify the arbitrary percentages that were proposed, and that research was needed to examine the efficacy of different evaluation percentages in different circumstances. We are therefore grateful to Historic England for funding CIfA and FAME to undertake this research. Our consultant, Taryn Nixon of Heritage Works, is currently developing a project design. We hope that the results of the project will inform future guidance authoritatively.
