This online seminar was titled Heritage as a catalyst for regeneration and was hosted by the RTPI South East region with Peter Hinton as one of three speakers.
It took place on Monday, 9 May 2022.
This seminar is a great example of our collaborative relationship with RTPI.
Seminar speakers were:

- Karen Britton, Planning Manager (Development and Engagement) at Canterbury City Council
- Matthew Henderson, Barrister at Landmark Chambers
Seminar Chair was Jayanand Kumaraguru, architecture and planning professional from LG Planning and RTPI General Assembly member.
In this webinar the speakers discussed:
- The ways in which heritage assets can be considered as opportunities and not constraints to the regeneration processes
- Examples of projects where heritage has successfully been integrated into a regeneration programme
- The challenges faced when integrating heritage assets into the regeneration processes
- Case law update
Peter Hinton’s key messages were that archaeology is a catalyst for change. It can help with placemaking, reputation and images, skills development and sustainable development. Peter emphasised the importance of public engagement and of engaging accredited archaeologist at the earliest stage of a regeneration development project.
Questions from delegates focused on including public engagement as a planning condition; how planners can work across disciplines to help deliver heritage rich developments that achieve sustainable outcomes; how social benefit can be generated by small projects as well as large; financial viability.
