A fifteen month professional work placement is available under the English Heritage Historic Environment Placements scheme, managed by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. This placement offers a training opportunity to develop skills in the recognition, interpretation and analysis of archaeological monuments and landscapes using a variety of non-invasive techniques. This includes the interpretation of aerial photographs and other forms of airborne remote sensing data, analytical field survey and geophysical survey. The work involves the interpretation of sites and landscapes within a date range from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century.
The successful candidate will spend six months with the Aerial Investigation and Mapping team and then six months with Assessment team, both based in York; and up to three-months working with the Geophysics team in the field and based in Fort Cumberland. Most of this will take place in the second half of the placement but the exact timings will be agreed during the course of 2015 as the opportunities and priorities for fieldwork becoming clear.
The placement is designed for those with some experience of historic environment practice through study, work experience or both but who have not had the opportunity to develop more specialist skills and competencies.
Placement holders will be employed by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and seconded to English Heritage for the duration. They will be paid GBP £17,094 per annum, rising in line with CIfA minimum salary recommendations from 1 April 2015. An employer’s pension contribution of 6% of salary will also be made.
Closing date for applications: Wednesday 31 December 2014
Interviews: take place over 2 days between 27, 28 and 29 January 2015
