Engine Shed is Historic Environment Scotland’s new £11 million national building conservation centre which officially opened in July. The new learning and visitor resource will serve as a national conservation hub, using world-leading innovation to bring Scotland’s built heritage to life through technology and hands-on activities.
Details about the Engine Shed:
• Formerly a MOD munitions store, sustainability was at the heart of the development retaining as much of the original fabric and character of the building as possible
• Houses HES’s digital documentation, science conservation and education and outreach teams
• Main space features a large-scale map of Scotland compiled from high-res satellite images which can be accessed via iPads as an augmented reality device
• Aims to spark the public’s passion and interest in the historic environment and inspire a new generation to be interested in traditional buildings
• Launched an advanced diploma in technical building conservation for students, graduates or those working within the industry
• Temporary displays of conservation work, such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh pieces recovered from the Glasgow School of Art fire
• Events programme bringing together technology and traditional skills
